Calligraphers Bios

Muhammad Özçay

Muhammad Özçay was born in 1961 in Caykara, in the district of Tabzon, Turkey. His interest in calligraphy began while he was in secondary school and later while he was completing a degree in religious studies the he met the calligrapher Fuad Bashar in 1982. He began learning the naskh script from him and later progressed onto thulth. He graduated from the University of Ataturk in Irdurum in 1986 from whence he then moved to Istanbul where he met the Calligraphy expert at the Research Center for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA). Professor Derma became his teacher and guide in the art of calligraphy and through him was able to reach and elevated level of understanding and appreciation of the art.

He participated in the first and second international calligraphy competitions in 1986 organized by IRCICA. He won six prizes awarded for various scripts, including first in both naskh and thuluth. In 1992 he wrote a large Qur'an which was printed several times in various sizes. He has also participated in many exhibitions all over the Muslim World and is presently engaged in the process of producing a catalogue of his major works in the various scripts which is expected to contain one hundred examples of his work.
